What Unattended Death Cleanup Includes

Every scene is different. The amount of work needed depends on where the incident happened, the materials affected, how much time has passed, and whether contamination has spread into nearby areas.

Do Not Attempt to Clean the Scene Yourself

Decomposing body cleanup is especially difficult due to try to clean on your own due to amount of bodily fluids seeping into the floors, subfloors and walls. If something is missed then there will be a linger odor. Blood and bodily fluids can carry bacteria, viruses, and other harmful contaminants. Even areas that appear clean may still contain biohazard material in flooring, walls, furniture, cracks, or other hidden spaces.

Household cleaners, mops, and shop vacuums are not designed for this type of work. Cleaning without proper training and protective equipment may spread contamination instead of removing it, cause potential liability for yourself (there are laws against improper disposal of biohazard waste) and make it more difficult for us to know where the blood or bodily fluids were originally present if you call us after you started cleaning.

Do not use a vacuum or carpet cleaner on the affected area.

1. How much does a unattended death/decomposition cleanup costs?

The cost depends on the size of the affected area, the materials involved, the amount of contamination, how long the scene has been present, and whether flooring, drywall, furniture, or other materials must be removed. An average ballpark price will be between $2,000-$6000 plus tax, but can go much higher. There is likely to be more demolition with this type of cleanup due to bodily fluid having days or weeks to seep into the floor so there will be some reconstruction that you will need to address after we finish.

2. Does homeowner’s insurance cover unattended death cleanup?

Many homeowners, renters, landlord, and commercial property policies may cover some or all of the cleanup, depending on the policy and circumstances. You will have to contact them to ask if a homicide cleanup is covered We can provide estimates, photographs, invoices, and other documentation your insurer may request.

3. Should I try to clean the area myself?

No. Blood, bodily fluids, and contaminated materials may expose you to bloodborne pathogens and other health risks as well as liability. Household cleaning products and inexperience may also spread contamination into other areas making it more difficult for a company such as Bio Decon Solutions to come in after the fact and know where to start. Bodily fluids can seep deep into the floor, through nail holes or seems so it is likely that you will miss something and there will continue to be an odor. Don’t do it!

4. When can the cleanup begin?

Decomposing body cleanup can begin as soon as the scene has been released by the police. Sometimes that can take multiple days depending on the investigation.

5. How long does homicide cleaning take?

Cleanups can take anywhere from a few hours to multiple days with most cleanups being completed within a day or two.

6. Will the entire home need to be cleaned?

Not usually. Only the affected area and any places where contamination has spread require biohazard cleanup. We inspect the scene carefully so only necessary rooms and materials are cleaned.

7. Can carpet, fabric furniture and personal belongings such as clothes and bedding be saved?

The industry standard is that all porous materials that have absorbed blood or bodily fluids need to be disposed of as biohazard waste. We inspect affected items and explain what can safely be kept.

8. What if I find something I think you missed?

If on the off chance that we missed something there will likely be a lingering odor (it does happen on occasion). Call us back and we will quickly take care of the problem. Perseverance is one of our Core Values. We will make as many trips back as we need to take care of our clients.
